Changes to finance and benefits

Some important changes when you turn 18 - changes to finances and benefits

When you turn 18, there may be changes to the benefits and tax credits that your parents receive to help pay for your needs.

The exact timing of these changes depends on your age, whether you are in education, and if you are considered independent, as well as your family's circumstances.

Your benefits will be taken into account when determining the support, you need and how much you may need to contribute towards your care and living expenses.

If you need help managing your finances, Surrey County Council and Society Of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) can provide information and support.

You can also find information on the Surrey Local Offer website, which is designed for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their parents or carers.
