Our Cornerstone Employers don't just walk the walk; they lead the way in terms of their engagement with schools and colleges in Surrey, mobilising additional engagement via their supply chains and acting as ambassadors for their sectors.
The Surrey Careers Hub's goal is to make sure every young person can find their best next step out of education and into the world of work, fulfilling their full potential. Bridging the gap between employers and schools and colleges is key to making that mission a reality.
In partnership with the Careers & Enterprise Company, we work with employers to inspire and prepare young people in education with a modern, comprehensive careers programme.
What is a Cornerstone Employer?
Our Cornerstone Employers are a community of businesses. They work with the Surrey Careers Hub and other local employers to engage directly with schools and colleges in a joined-up and strategic way, supporting world-class careers education in our region.
By partnering with us as a Cornerstone Employer, we can benefit young people in the local region and your business.
Cornerstone Employers:
- Act as Surrey Careers Hub ambassadors
- Work with the Surrey Careers Hub Help to promote equal opportunities and tackle disadvantage among young people
- Embed careers education into their organisation
- Push for better outcomes for young people
- Encourage employees to join our network of business volunteers who partner with schools/colleges and inspire young people across Surrey
- Utilise business networks to engage with other local businesses, inspiring them to join our mission

Why become a Cornerstone Employer?
By getting involved as a Cornerstone Employer, you'll have a stronger connection to your local community and businesses. This, in turn, makes your workplace culture more attractive to future employees, bolstering your talent pipeline.
Many studies and online articles show that having opportunities to 'give something back' is important to today's workforce, so why not get involved?
Signing up as a Cornerstone Employer can also:
- Influence and inspire more young people to consider your industry
- Give you opportunities to collaborate with like-minded businesses
- Build a diverse future talent pipeline, helping to fill skills gaps
- Back social mobility in your local area by supporting those who might otherwise struggle to reach their full potential
- Increase employee engagement by offering more opportunities to develop valuable skills and experience
Pathways to Highways
Two of our Cornerstone Employers - Nescot and Ringway - recently collaborated to host an interactive day promoting new entry level courses in highways maintenance.
The one-year Level 1 and Entry Level courses develop skills in construction, employability and digital with a focus on highway maintenance. Each one leads to an apprenticeship opportunity with Ringway or its supply chain partner Eurovia.
Slavina Kalendzhieva, Head of Foundation Learning at Nescot, said: "The courses offer clear pathways from education to vocational, employment and apprenticeship opportunities and will help students develop skillsets for next steps after college."
Carolyn Jay, Community and Place Manager at Ringway, said: "We are really excited to be working with Nescot. The college has been so excellent and responsive to us being on campus to demonstrate to students the wide range of work opportunities in the highways industry which needs young people. We want to showcase how accessible it is to work in this sector."
