Nursery units of independent schools

Find registered childcare near you

Nursery units of independent schools provide care and early education for children from two years old and are usually run by private or voluntary organisations as part of an independent school.

Some nursery units of independent schools will not be registered with Ofsted but will be monitored as part of the school's inspection.

Paying for childcare

There will be a fee to attend, which will be published on the nursery or school's website. Some independent nurseries will be registered for the Funded early education and childcare for 3 and 4-year-olds which means you could claim up to 15 hours a week of funded childcare for your child from the term after their third birthday. If you are a working parent, you could also be eligible for 30 hours funded childcare for working parents.

You can check whether you may be eligible for help with childcare costs via the Childcare Choices website or by using the Childcare Calculator. You can also find details of support available to help with childcare costs on our Paying for childcare web page.

How can I apply for a place?

You can apply for a place by contacting the nursery directly. If you are applying for a funded childcare place you may have to register your child well in advance as many childcare providers operate waiting lists.

You can search for nursery units of independent schools in your area in our Childcare finder.
