'Finding Your Feet - work and life skills mentoring' is a voluntary scheme aimed to improve the life chances and economic wellbeing of children and young people in care and care leavers in Surrey.
Every young person in care who applies to the scheme is matched with a mentor who has a skills, trade or professional background. The mentor and young person meet regularly to look together at what job or training support the young person may need right now, what might be a suitable longer term career choice or vocation, and what factors need to be in place for them to achieve their aspirations.
By having a mentor a young person is provided with:
- consistent contact during an important period of transition
- qualitative, personal support which raises self esteem and confidence
- advice and guidance from someone who has skills and experience in a particular area and a networks of professional contacts to draw upon
- help in CV writing and job or training applications
- help to identify basic skills that may need improvement in order to enter a workplace
- help to develop communication and interview skills
- support in understanding finances and basic budgeting.
