Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) planning advice

Surrey County Council is a Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) and, as such, is a statutory consultee to the planning process for surface water on all major developments.

Where appropriate and when specifically requested by the Local Planning Authority (LPA), we also advise LPAs on surface water flood risk and sustainable drainage systems.

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are required on all planning applications in England in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

We have produced the following guidance which contains a summary of the information, and the evidence needed, to demonstrate that SuDS have been satisfactorily considered within the planning process. Demonstrating that the requirements of our guidance have been met will assist the LLFA and LPA in assessing an application which can lead to a more streamlined assessment process.

Design guidance for 'major' development

Design guidance for 'major' development sets out the requirements for surface water drainage strategies and surface water management provisions associated with applications for 'major' development.

Design guidance for 'non-major' development

Design guidance for 'non-major' development sets out the requirements for surface water drainage strategies and surface water management provisions associated with applications for 'non-major' development.
