How one young mum's journey with Family Learning led to a new career.
Sam is a busy mum looking after her home and young family. Originally from Southern India, she has settled in Surrey.
Despite the satisfaction and joy of watching her sons develop, she felt socially isolated and wanted to find a way to connect with the local community and improve her English skills.
Sam picked up a flyer at her sons' primary school and signed up for an English for EAL Parents course, run by Surrey Adult Learning's Family Learning programme. During the course she practised her English whilst learning about the school system and made friends along the way. She said "Courses like this are really helpful for people from abroad. I made new friends and built a social network outside the classroom. We are like family; we are still friends today."
Attending Family Learning courses gave Sam a much-needed boost to her self-esteem. She felt more confident managing the relationship with school and better equipped to support her children.
With support from her tutor, Sam progressed onto GCSE courses in both English and maths at a college, which formalised her learning with accredited examinations. Sam continued her progress, working towards employment by volunteering at her sons' primary school. This led to paid employment as a midday supervisor, and also supporting as a Teaching Assistant when cover is required.
Sam's determination is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through learning. She is happy to share how Family Learning helped her lay the foundations to progress towards a job she loves and is able to help to teach others. She encourages others to join Family Learning courses.
