Surrey Adult Learning is thrilled to celebrate another extraordinary year of GCSE academic performance.
It is with great pleasure that Surrey Adult Learning shares the outcomes of our GCSE English and GCSE Maths exams for the academic year 2023/2024.
- English Language GCSE pass rate 96.5%
- Mathematics GCSE pass rate 100%
Our learners should feel incredibly proud of their achievements through their dedication to their studies while leading busy lives. This would not have been achieved without our qualified tutors and volunteers who have supported and encouraged every learner to realise their dreams.
At Surrey Adult Learning (SAL) we have a passion for learning, and we help develop learners individual needs through support and guidance.
At 43, English GCSE learner Yvette has achieved her dream of an English GCSE.
Yvette struggled in her school years after losing her mother and after raising children, post lockdown decided to get back into education.
In 2021 she achieved a Maths GCSE with Surrey Adult Learning and came back in 2023 to complete her English GCSE.
Yvette had always struggled with spelling and thought she wasn't concentrating enough. Following an assessment with SAL, she was diagnosed with dyslexia. Support was put in place with extra time and a word processor for the examination.
Following a busy year with a full-time job and 16 hours a week as a voluntary Special Police Officer she has achieved a GCSE English Grade 5.
Yvette says 'I always had it as achievement I wanted to do, although took me to age 43 to achieve. You just have to put your mind to it, when you in right frame of mind and stretch yourself. Go ahead and do it. You are never too old'
Learner Tatiana, aged 40, achieved a grade 5 and says if you have always wanted to 'Go for it, don't stop, if you do not try you will never know.'
Tatiana originally from the Ukraine moved to the UK 7 years ago. She works part time in a retail shop and dreams of completing a university degree in interior design and running her own business. Her next step is enrolling to complete GCSE Maths.
Tatiana says 'I am more confident, I have stronger knowledge, I have a lot of advantages. I am really happy. I feel like a butterfly!'
Learner Kim aged 48, is now on the path to a new career as a schoolteacher. Having trained as a nurse practitioner she decided on a new career and starting in September will be embarking on her dream job.
Kim achieved a Grade 5 GCSE Maths and says, 'The teachers were great, the bite size learning helped me gain the confidence I needed.
