Surrey Supported Learning offers a wide range of courses for adults with learning disabilities (LD). The courses are designed with focus on gaining essential skills for life and to help learners to build confidence. There is a real sense of belonging in the class and valuable friendships are made and reinforced as part of attending the programme. Some of our courses enable learners to work towards nationally recognised qualifications that promote our values of inclusiveness as at Surrey Adult Learning we ensure that nobody feels 'left behind'.
The Supported Learners benefit not only from great teaching delivered by our qualified tutors, and Supported Learning Assistants but importantly, the vital support of knowledgeable volunteers, who go the extra mile to ensure that each learner is actively involved on the course and contribute to a happy learning environment. The outcomes are promising, with our Supported Learners continuing onto other courses using the skills they have learnt and practised.
This term the Supported Learning group have been producing another range of items to sell to raise money for the learners' chosen charities. The Easter theme resulted in a vibrant range of pottery, from wreaths to spring rabbits, to decorate the home with style and colour. This popular event was well attended and gave the Supported Learners an opportunity to showcase their talent and skills. The Pottery Enterprise course involves using lots of different skills, from making choices together as a team, creating and producing eye catching designs, setting pricing, promoting the event, and handling money. Our learners really enjoyed the event which felt like running a pop-up shop!
As follows, learner Callum shares his account:
"On Friday 18 March we had another Pottery Enterprise sale at the Guildford Adult Learning Centre. We raised Just Over £120 for Charity!
This event was special as we celebrated 4 events in 1: Mothering Sunday, Red Nose Day, Easter, and it was Michael's Birthday in the afternoon class, a few days before. I have taken photographs I enjoy doing that as photography is one of my other hobbies. The weather was absolutely lovely on the day with gorgeous sunshine.
Thank you to everyone for coming to the Pottery Enterprise sale Last Friday it was lovely to see you all. Hope you enjoy your wonderful Easter Products.
This term I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Easter!
Best Wishes
Callum "
