Top tips if you're travelling abroad or staying at home
The summer months are finally upon us, even if the sunny weather hasn't arrived yet...
We have prepared a summer hub with information, help and advice on how to stay safe, keep up to date, stay well and keep busy over the summer period.
While most of us look forward to the hot weather, some of us can find the heat uncomfortable and can experience sunburn, heat stroke and bites.
During the summer there may be water shortages, wildfires and disruptions to travel. Sometimes, the school holidays can cause extra financial struggles. Our summer hub pages will help you prepare for all outcomes. You can also sign up to receive heat-health alerts and flooding alerts.
Staying home
If you're staying home this summer there's lots of things going on in Surrey to keep the whole family entertained. Check out the Visit Surrey what's on guide for free events and activities happening in your area.
Surrey is home to lots of beautiful countryside which makes for a fun and free family day out. Check out the different areas of woodland and amazing scenery near you on the countryside web pages.
Surrey Libraries are Where it Happens and will have lots of events and activities taking place throughout the summer.
Be safe when swimming in rivers and lakes
Taking a dip in a river or a lake may seem a great way to cool down, but please be aware of the risks. The Surrey Fire and Rescue Service's web page has helpful information about staying safe in Surrey's rivers and lakes. For more water safety advice visit Healthy Surrey.
Festivals and ticket fraud
It's festival season and there are lots of concerts and events happening inside the county and across the UK. Whether it's the FA cup final, the British Grand Prix or even Taylor Swift, fraudsters are finding new way to target festival goers.
Follow the advice from Trading Standards on how to avoid ticket scams.
Sexual health testing
Are you single and ready to mingle this summer? If you're heading off on holiday or attending festivals, take a moment to think about your sexual health status:
- Condoms protect against sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy. Join our C-Card scheme to access FREE condoms.
- You can order a free STI testing kit and book an in person or telephone appointment to discuss contraception or PrEP.
Find out more information on the Healthy Surrey sexual health web page.
Travelling abroad
If you are planning to travel, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recommends you check you are up to date with all necessary vaccines. It's better to check this well in advance.
This is especially important if you are travelling where there are mass gatherings such as festivals, Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. This includes both doses of the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella). Measles is one of the most infectious diseases in the world.
Travel Health Pro has up-to-date information on health risks in countries across the world.
