Growing a greener future

Help us reach our tree planting goals

We have a goal to plant 1.2 million trees by 2030. This means planting one tree for every person living in Surrey. This will support us with our goal to reach net-zero as a county by 2050.

As well as absorbing carbon, trees play a vital role to build resilience to impacts of climate change such as flooding. They also help to recover nature and boost biodiversity, as they provide much needed habitat to many bird and animal species.

To support us in achieving our goal, we are offering opportunities to get involved.

Volunteer to plant trees

We are hosting tree planting events on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 11 February at Tanyards Meadow, Horley
  • Tuesday 25 February at West Park Farm, Newchapel, between Lingfield and Horley
  • Wednesday 26 February at West Park Farm, Newchapel, between Lingfield and Horley
  • Thursday 27 February at West Park Farm, Newchapel, between Lingfield and Horley

We will be planting hedgerows. Hedgerows provide food and shelter for wildlife, and improve soil condition.

Everyone is welcome to join us and sign up to volunteer. You don't need any experience. Just dress warmly, bring a spade if you have one, and come ready to help. We hope to see you there!

Collect a free tree from Surrey Libraries

If you can't attend a volunteer day but are still keen to support our tree planting programme, we are giving away free trees at these libraries on the morning of Saturday 8 February:

  • Bramley
  • Esher
  • Horley
  • Horsley
  • New Haw
  • Tattenhams
  • Staines
  • West Byfleet

These trees are native, broad-leaved species and come with everything you need to plant them in your garden. Each tree also comes with a leaflet on how to plant and care for it. Trees are given out on a first-come, first-served basis, so come early to get yours! For more information, visit our library activities webpage.

Once you've planted your tree or hedgerow, don't forget to add it to our new tree strategy interactive map.
