Staying safe and well while enjoying the season
With the bank holidays, school break and Easter almost here, many of us will be heading outdoors to enjoy the longer and warmer days of spring.
Follow along for some tips on how to stay safe and well.
Farm safety
Visiting farms is a popular choice, especially during lambing season. But farm animals can carry germs that can be passed onto humans. Follow these tips to ensure your day is fun and safe:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water immediately after touching any animals, and before eating or drinking. Dry your hands with paper towels. Sanitising gels and wipes don't effectively remove the bugs found on farms.
- Only eat and drink in designated picnic and eating areas.
- Avoid open-toed shoes. After your visit, clean your boots or shoes and pushchair wheels, then wash your hands properly.
- If you've had contact with animals, wash your clothing at 40°C or hotter when you get home.
For more information, visit the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) website.
Be tick aware
Countryside walks are a great way to enjoy nature and boost wellbeing, but it's important to be tick aware. This is especially important in grassy or woodland areas. Here's some tips to avoid them:
- Walk on clearly defined paths, avoiding brushing against vegetation.
- Perform regular tick checks. Remove ticks safely and quickly using fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool. Check pets after walks too.

Pollen allergies (hay fever)
If you suffer from hay fever, it is best to stay indoors when the pollen is high. It's also a good idea to take allergy medication before symptoms start, like antihistamines and corticosteroid nasal sprays.
For more tips visit Hay fever - NHS and check the Pollen forecast so you can be better prepared.
Travelling abroad
If you're planning to travel this year, Travel Health Pro, supported by UKHSA, is a one-stop shop for travellers. The website has information on health risks and recommended vaccinations for countries worldwide. Including if you plan to travel for Hajj and Umrah .
