Discovering, Preserving, Celebrating
Surrey Heritage collects and rescues archives relating to Surrey's past and present. These archives and printed materials help tell the story of the county. Preserving the memories and history of its people for future generations to enjoy.
These archives are held at Surrey History Centre in Woking. Within this building, there are six miles of shelving which holds documents. These documents date from the 12th century to the present day.
Strongroom filled with archives
They include, parish records, tithe maps and Tudor letters, estate papers, hospital records and early watercolours. All these collections are ready to be explored. You can trace the history of your own family, street or town.
The collections tell the extraordinary story of Surrey, its people and communities. You can find out
- about men who served in Surrey's regiments
- uncover the history of a Broadwood piano
- or even learn about famous writers, artists and gardeners.
Surrey History Centre is home to Surrey County Archaeological Unit. A long established provider of high quality archaeological services. It is also a part of Surrey Museums Partnership, a gateway to over forty museums in Surrey.
Conserving a 16th century notebook
Surrey History Centre is free to visit. There are lots of online and in person events catering to all ages and interests. Staff can also provide specialist talks to groups across the county and at the Centre.
