Pebble Hill, Betchworth – solving the drainage issues together

What a fantastic example of teamwork in action! This month, we successfully completed planned drainage work on Pebble Hill/Station Approach, Betchworth ahead of schedule, preventing the need for frequent temporary repairs. This project was made possible through discussions with our Surrey Highways team, Betchworth Parish Council and County Councillor Helyn Clack.

Earlier this year, drainage investigations revealed the need for repairs to the highway drainage, particularly after the gully at the bottom of the hill collapsed following heavy rainfall. When it collapsed again in early October, we had to put temporary traffic signals in place, causing congestion and long queues near the railway line.

Recognising the urgency of the situation, County Councillor Helyn Clack and Betchworth Parish Council collaborated with our team to fast-track the necessary repairs. We diverted resources to Pebble Hill/Station Road and managed to replace 65.5 meters of drainage pipe and connections in just five days, less than half the planned time of two and a half weeks! The road was reopened on Friday, 25 October, much to the relief of local residents.

While the road was closed, our team didn't stop there. They also cleared drains that are often hard to access, repaired damaged posts and railings, and even co-ordinated vegetation cutting along the footpath to minimise future disruptions.

Councillor Helyn Clack expressed her gratitude, saying, "Many thanks to you and the team." She highlighted the success of this project as a shining example of local collaboration and effective delivery that benefits the entire community.
