Building a brighter future in Surrey

Celebrating progress across our Capital Projects Programme

Our Capital Projects Programme is a multi-million-pound investment in buildings across the county. There are over 140 ongoing projects. We invest in Capital Projects because we want to make Surrey a better place to live and ensure no one is left behind.

Here are some updates on a few of our projects:

Hopescourt Special Educational Needs (SEN) School, Elmbridge

We are investing over £26 million to build a new school in Walton-on-Thames for children with additional needs. This school will be the first net zero carbon specialist free school in Surrey. Hopescourt School will support up to 200 autistic children and children with communication and interaction needs.

Pupils and staff from Hopescourt School recently celebrated the construction of the steel frame for their new school. They signed steel beams that will form part of the new building. The school is at a temporary site in Molesey and should move to its new permanent location in Walton-on-Thames in spring 2026.

Meadowcroft Lodge, Guildford

We have started building our first extra care housing site designed for older people, in Guildford. This extra care housing is new affordable homes to rent and will help our older residents receiving support from our adult social care service live independently for longer.

Meadowcroft Lodge will offer 59 one and two-bedroom apartments to rent. There will also be a café and gardens. We plan to build many more affordable rental apartments like this across Surrey by 2030. We already have outline planning permission for extra care housing at a further seven sites across the county. These are in Worcester Park, Camberley, Ottershaw, Banstead, Redhill, Egham, and Lingfield. Extra care housing is part of our Right Homes, Right Support Strategy (PDF).

Salt barns, Guildford and Tandridge

We have built a new barn to store salt for gritting roads in winter at our Merrow highways depot. The new salt barn at Merrow can store 4,000 tonnes of salt. This helps keep our roads safe even if salt prices go up or supplies run low. We are also nearing completion on the construction of a second new salt barn at our Godstone depot. We already have salt barns at our Bagshot and Witley depots.

Applewood Respite Care Centre, Epsom & Ewell

Applewood Respite Care Centre is a place where families with disabled children can get support. The centre supports children aged five to eighteen. We invested over £1.5 million to upgrade the facilities and expand Applewood Centre to help more families. Applewood provides a mix of day-care and overnight support services for children with conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, and epilepsy. The centre has specialist facilities to make sure children are safe and comfortable.

This is a snapshot of just some of our many projects across Surrey. Stay tuned for more updates about what we are building and the positive impact it will have in local communities.
