Stay battery safe this festive season

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service warns of battery fire risks

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is urging residents to stay safe by raising awareness about lithium-ion batteries. As we decorate our homes with lights and prepare gifts for loved ones this festive season, it's important to be cautious. These batteries, found in everything from smartphones and laptops to e-bikes and toys, are causing more fires in Surrey homes.

So far this year, SFRS has attended 55 battery-related fires, compared to 53 last year, 20 in 2022, and just 13 in 2021. The rise in fire incidents shows the importance of proper handling and charging lithium-ion batteries.

The dangers of lithium-ion batteries

If damaged, overcharged, or exposed to heat, these batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.

Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries spread quickly. They are challenging to extinguish, posing a serious risk to people and property.

Station Commander Steve Love, from SFRS's Safeguarding, Fire Investigation, and Environment (SaFE) team, says: "Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere, and while they make our lives easier, they also come with risks.

By following these simple precautions, we can avoid unnecessary incidents and keep everyone safe this festive season. Let's work together to make safety a priority as we celebrate Christmas this year."

Simple steps to keep your Christmas safe

  • When buying batteries or chargers, ensure they are compatible with your device. Always buy from the same reputable retailer where you got the original item.
  • Unplug your battery and charger once the battery has charged, don't leave it to over-charge.
  • Don't charge or store your lithium batteries or e-bikes and e-scooters in corridors, or on an exit route. If a fire breaks out your escape will be blocked.
  • Regularly check your batteries for any damage or wear and tear.
  • Dispose of batteries properly. Old or damaged batteries shouldn't go in household waste. Use dedicated recycling points or your local recycling centre.
