The reasons why we use your personal data

Purpose / function of the service

This privacy notice applies to the functions of the Environment and Infrastructure service that carries out the statutory highway functions within Surrey County Council (SCC) relating to highway structures.

What processing of personal data is undertaken by the Service?

SCC has a statutory responsibility as the Highway Authority to ensure the public highway is safe for use. This includes being able to contact private bridge owners to ensure they take necessary action so that their structures do not compromise the safety of the users of the public highway.

In carrying out inspections and works on structures owned by SCC it is often necessary to contact land owners/occupiers regarding access.

What information do we collect?

We collect the minimum of information that is necessary to undertake our statutory duty:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Contact Details
  • Contents of any documents provided

How we are allowed to use your personal data

We are allowed to hold your personal data as it is necessary in order for us to perform our statutory highway duties under various UK legislation including but not limited to the Highways Act 1980.

Who we share your personal data with

This data will be shared with the SCC contractor appointed to carry out the inspection or works on the highway structure, for the purposes of their making contact with the landowner regarding arranging works.

There are statutory bodies that we may contact and share information with in the course of undertaking our statutory work. These can include the Environment Agency and the Police.

Automated decision making (when computers make any decisions about you)

We do not use automated decision making.

Personal data being sent or processed outside of the UK and EU

We do not send or process data outside of the UK and EU.

Retention of data

Data will be retained in accordance with SCC's countywide data retention schedule.
