Surrey's countryside has a large and varied network of footpaths, byways and bridleways that criss-cross the county, more than 2,000 miles to be precise available for public enjoyment 365 days a year. It is easy to reach by car, bus or train.

Different types of paths are open for use by different users. Take a look at our Signs in the Countryside page to find information on other countryside paths and open access areas in Surrey, including Statutory Open Access land which is mapped by Natural England. Information about rights of way and accessing land is available and please always observe The Countryside Code as set out below.
The Countryside Code
The Countryside Code (GOV.UK) is national statutory guidance issued by the Government that gives general guidelines for countryside usage that everyone should be aware of.
Follow these simple steps and you'll help protect the countryside, as well as enjoying a great day out:
Respect other people
- Consider the local community and other people enjoying the outdoors
- Leave gates and property as you find them and follow paths unless wider access is available
Protect the natural environment
- Leave no trace of your visit and take your litter home
- Keep dogs under effective control, particularly around livestock. Don't feed or pet animals in fields
Enjoy the outdoors
- Plan ahead and be prepared - always a good idea to look at local weather conditions before setting off
- Follow advice and take note of local signs
