This index to the register of deaths in the Surrey County Gaol, 1798 to 1878, gives name, age, date of death and occupation. The gaol in Horsemonger Lane, Newington, was Surrey's principal prison and place of execution up to its closure in 1878. The gaol housed both criminals and debtors, and had a capacity of around 300 inmates.
The original register (reference QS5/4/7/24), held at Surrey History Centre, also gives the offence and the cause of death (including executions).
This index was made by Jane Lewis.
