Seamless tithe and first edition 25 inch OS maps of Surrey

In cooperation with David Young, Surrey History Centre has created a range of digital maps which are 'Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled'. They have been re-sized and re-oriented so that they correspond to the Ordnance Survey (OS) National Grid. The original maps were drawn on multiple sheets, but when viewed with GIS software both the tithe maps and the OS maps appear as single continuous sheets. This makes it much easier to locate places of interest and use the maps for historical research.

The maps are available on four dvds and are supplied with high-quality free GIS software. This software can be used for a wide variety of GIS purposes, not just viewing the tithe and OS maps. Those familiar with GIS or with reasonable confidence in using computers should have little difficulty in using the software with the maps.

If you are unsure whether you will be comfortable using the system you may prefer to attend an introductory one-day course before buying. These will be run as and when the need arises. Please contact shs@surreycc.gov.uk if you would be interested in a course.

Each of the four dvds covers roughly a quarter of the post-1965 county of Surrey, including the Spelthorne district of the former Middlesex. For more details about the content of the dvds, please see the PDF at the bottom of this page.

The dvds can be ordered using Visa/Mastercard/Debit card from the Surrey Heritage online shop. The charge for each disc is £30 plus postage and packaging. Alternatively, you can send a cheque made payable to 'Surrey County Council' to Surrey History Centre, 130 Goldsworth Road, Woking, Surrey GU21 6ND. When you order, please ensure you tell us which disc or discs you would like. If you are contacting us from outside the UK, please let us know your country of origin as changes in VAT legislation may affect the services we can provide.

Please note that the dvds are only suitable for the Microsoft Windows systems.

Please note that this material is only available to purchase, and is not available to view in the search room at Surrey History Centre.
