This role has a starting salary of £32,512 per annum, based on a 36 hour working week. 

We are excited to be hiring a new Road Safety Engineer to join our fantastic Road Safety and Sustainable School Travel team. The team are based in Woking, but cover the whole county of Surrey. As a team we operate a hybrid style combining remote working with up to two days a week in the office to network with colleagues and attend team meetings. Site meetings and visits are a vital part of this role, therefore the role holder will need to have the willingness and ability to travel around the county to meet the demands of the role.

About the Team
The Safety Engineering Team are part of the wider Road Safety and Sustainable Schools Travel Team. We are a small team but committed, professional and outcome driven!
The aim of the Road Safety and Schools Sustainable Travel Team is to reduce road casualties, reduce anti-social driving and promote more walking and cycling. This will be achieved through a variety of measures including highway safety engineering and infrastructure improvements, working with the police on the enforcement of road traffic law (particularly using safety cameras), and education, training and promotional campaigns to improve pedestrian and cycling skills and improved road user behaviour.
The work of the Safety Engineering Team is integral to the casualty reduction efforts within the County. The team work closely with a range of other teams in the council's Environment and Infrastructure Directorate, regularly responding to queries from County Council Members, schools, District and Borough colleagues and parish councils.

About the Role
In this role you will assist other members of the Safety Engineering Team to undertake casualty analysis, promote highway safety engineering schemes to tackle sites with a known casualty history and take an active role in conducting Road Safety Audits. A nurturing team atmosphere will enable you to help develop and increase our achievements to date. No two days will be the same, dealing with enquiries regarding highway safety, investigating collisions sites and promoting road safety engineering measures within the County. This is a customer facing service where the needs of our customers are at the centre of delivery.

Shortlisting Criteria
To be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:
  • Educated to A level or equivalent alternative
  • Knowledge of highway engineering
  • Knowledge of approaches and methods to mitigate collisions within the highway
  • Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to build sound relationships with customers
  • Ability to prepare and present reports in a logical and digestible format with a methodical approach to information gathering and recording
  • High level administrative and organisational skills with good IT skills (including Powerpoint, Word and Excel)
  • Able to prioritise and plan own workload in the context of conflicting priorities and work on own initiative
