Surrey connect: on demand bus service

Surrey Connect is a safe and reliable bus sharing service connecting you to your local community. It is available to everyone in Surrey in the areas shown on the map.

It is a digital on demand bus service, known as a Digital Demand Responsive Transport (DDRT) solution.

How it works

The service uses accessible minibuses, with journey bookings made on a first come first served basis. Our software cleverly groups customer demands together in real time.

When the booking is made with the "leave at" feature, the software takes your requested time and compares it with other customer requests in the area.

It then links them up to create single journeys that are convenient for a group of users at once, scheduling the pickup time within a window of 10 minutes before or 10 minutes after the preferred booking time.

Alternatively, if you need to be at your destination for a specific time, such as a train departure, you can use the "arrive at" feature. It will then dynamically generate options for you that will get you there and ensure you are never late.

To use this service, you will need to provide your email address or telephone number to register an account. You can do this online, via the app, or by phone.

Surrey Connect website

  • Download the "Surrey connect" mobile App – available from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
  • Call us – the booking line is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

It's super simple to book your journey. We just need 4 pieces of information from you:

  1. Where do you want to be picked up and dropped off?
  2. How many passengers will be travelling?
  3. When you would like to travel and what time? Remember to select "arrive at" if you need to get somewhere at a specific time.
  4. Do you need wheelchair access?

You'll then be presented with a list of journey options to suit your needs:

  • Choose your option and confirm the journey.
  • You will receive an email confirmation of your journey straight away.
  • Two text message reminders will be sent the day of your journey. The first will be 30 minutes before your pick-up time and the second will be 10 minutes before.
  • If there are any delays (more than 10 minutes) or interruptions, you will be notified straight away.

Before booking, please read our passenger information.

This explains how to book with a bus pass, if travelling in a wheelchair or with children under 5.

It also includes information on pushchairs, dogs and age restrictions for children travelling alone.

Passenger information

Free bus passes and LINK cards

Free bus passes and LINK cards (20 and unders) are both accepted on Surrey connect services.

They are only valid for travel after 9.30am Monday to Friday, and at all times at weekends and public holidays.

To make a booking using a Free bus pass or a LINK card via the App or booking page please follow the below steps:

  1. Select your chosen journey and continue to the payment screen
  2. Select 'Add a discount/subscription'
  3. A "Discounts and Subscriptions" box will appear, you can then add either a Free bus pass or a LINK card to your booking.
  4. Your fare will be automatically discounted depending on your pass type

If you hold a +C Free bus pass which entitles the passholder to take a carer or companion with them for free of charge then please add your companion or carer as a "concessionary pass +C". Please make sure that you also select the option for a "concessionary pass" for your own booking.

Please note that the driver will request to see your valid Free Bus card or LINK card when boarding the vehicle. If a journey is booked under the discounted rate but a valid pass is not presented to the driver, the journey will charged at full fare.

For all enquires, please contact us.

When booking your journey for yourself and your child under 5, if they will be needing their own seat you will need to book for 2 passengers.

When you progress to the summary page, you'll see on the payment detail the option to add a discount or subscription. All you'll then need to do is select the option for 'child travel under 5 years old'. This will then ensure that you are not charged for one of the passengers.

Please be aware that you will need to bring your own car seat if you need them to travel in one.

For all enquires, please contact us.

For those requiring to use the tail lift on the bus, please note there is a 350kg combined weight limit (user and equipment combined).

When booking via the App or website there is an option to select if travelling in a wheelchair. If you book via the call centre then you will need to let the call centre advisor know that you are travelling in your wheelchair.

Your driver will ensure that you are safely secured on the vehicle prior to travel.

Please note that you can only take collapsible pushchairs or mobility aids on board.

Due to the size of the vehicles being used for the connect services, only working dogs are allowed in the vehicles.

All children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.

You will always be informed if your bus is running more that 10 minutes late.

If it still hasn't arrived then please call the call centre for the DDRT service you are using. They will then be able to help you out.

As the connect service is a shared service, keeping to time is key to ensure that all passengers have the best experience.

Our drivers will wait a maximum of one minute for you before moving off. This will ensure that other passengers onboard are not delayed.

You can cancel your journey up to 30 minutes before you are due to board the bus. If payment has been taken, you will not be charged.

Vehicles are fitted with seatbelts which are height adjustable. We ask all passengers to wear the seatbelts provided.

We are currently not able to fulfil journeys related to travel to or from schools in the peak morning and afternoon times. Timetable information for local bus services which service schools in the area is available here: Local bus services serving schools.

Students who are travelling to further educational establishments and colleges outside of the area can still use the service to access rail stations and other bus stops.

The Surrey Connect service is being operated on behalf of Surrey County Council by the following operators:

  • Central Surrey: Mole Valley District Council
  • North and Southwest Surrey: Woking Bustler
  • East Surrey: East Surrey Rural Transport Partnership

You can check whether a location is served by Surrey Connect on the Surrey Connect App or the Surrey connect website.

You can input the full address of where you want to start from and where you want to go, and the system will tell you if it is within the service area.

On the website, you can input the full address of where you want to start from and where you want to go. The system will select the closest stops for you if it is within the service area. On the next page, it will confirm the address of the stop and the walking distance to it. If you can download the Surrey Connect App, this will detail all of the stops and show you where they are.

The 'pick up point' is the name of the bus stop. All bus stops are named so that they can be easily recognised. The 'pick up address' is the geographical address so that if a passenger doesn't know the name of the bus stop, they can locate it via the address info.

Some of the bus stops in the service area are 'virtual', meaning that they are not established or current bus stops, but ones that we've put in place so that there are no gaps in provision. These virtual bus stops are usually listed with the 'pick up address' info.

If you need to book a return journey, then you just need to book in another journey at the time you'd like to travel back. The system doesn't provide the ability to book a return journey at the moment. This is a development that is being worked on.

It's very easy to cancel journeys, so if you cannot get a journey back from your destination at a suitable time, you can easily cancel the outward journey.
