Guildford Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan
Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) are ten-year plans for investing in walking and cycling within a defined area (such as a town, district or borough). LCWIPs are the best practice approach nationally for planning walking and cycling improvements, and our process follows Department for Transport guidance on developing an LCWIP.
We are working to develop an LCWIP for every district and borough, to cover the whole county, by the end of 2024. LCWIPs are updating and replacing the county's former cycling plans. We are currently developing an LCWIP for Guildford. To read more about LCWIPs, please visit our plans to improve walking and cycling webpage.
Local street improvements
Local street improvements are a key part of our Local Transport Plan 4, and they are featured within the planning for place policy area, referred to as 'liveable neighbourhoods'. This policy aims to plan, design and create safer, healthier and more attractive local environments that encourage more walking, wheeling and riding and increase opportunities to live and work locally.
We are considering opportunities for local street improvements in a number of communities in Surrey.
New zones will likely be distinct neighbourhood areas, bordered by busier roads or natural boundaries like railway lines and rivers. If agreed locally, new zones could become a part of the local street improvements programme in future years, subject to funding. Potential local street improvements zones will reflect on local area characteristics and context will be explored and developed into local street improvement plans agreed with the local community. We are currently at the early stages of this process in Guildford.
More information can be found on the local street improvements programme project page.
