A3100 - London Road
Proposals for London Road between London Road Rail Station and Boxgrove roundabout were originally being progressed as part of the Guildford Town Centre Transport Package. The scope of the project was later extended with the Department for Transport's Active Travel England funding to go from just south of London Road Rail Station / York Road to Burpham (including the Boxgrove Roundabout).
The scheme aims to ensure that the road is safer and more accessible for children, pedestrians and cyclists travelling around Guildford, for now and in the future, including to and from the Spectrum Leisure Centre and local schools.
For more information about the scheme, please visit the London Road Burpham webpage.
Guildford to Godalming cycleway
The Guildford to Godalming Greenway is a proposal to provide a continuous, high-quality, 7-kilometre route for walking, cycling and mobility access between the two towns. The scheme will encourage more travel by cycling and walking locally, reducing reliance on car travel.
This includes ongoing works to Dagley Lane, where the path is being reconstructed with a bound, all-weather surface to make it cyclable all year around.
Detailed design of the other parts of the cycle route between Guildford and Godalming town centre is underway, with support from Waverley and Guildford Borough Councils. To see all the proposals please visit the Guildford to Godalming Greenway commonplace site.
Guildford Sustainable Movement Corridor
The Sustainable Movement Corridor (SMC) was first devised during Guildford Borough Council's Local Plan preparation in the Guildford town and approaches movement study 2015. It is a route through the Guildford urban area intended to provide a "priority pathway through the town for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport".
The SMC was seen as necessary to deliver the level of strategic planned growth in the Guildford urban area in a sustainable way. It will link to Guildford town centre and other key trip generators including the University of Surrey's Stag Hill campus, Surrey Research Park and Royal Surrey County Hospital area to the west, Guildford College and the Guildford Spectrum leisure complex. It will also serve a number of key development sites.
The Guildford Borough Council Infrastructure Delivery Plan breaks the SMC down into six components (SMC1 to 6), while Guildford Borough Council's local plan, contains a number of site-specific policies that refer to the SMC.
A number of sections of SMC 1 (also referred to as SMC west) have already been delivered by Guildford Borough Council. More information can be found on Guildford Borough Councils Sustainable Movement Corridor project webpage. SMC 5 (also referred to as SMC north) is now being progressed through planning conditions associated with the Weyside Urban Village development.
The aims of the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) are in line with those of the SMC, and the delivery of the routes and infrastructure which are contained in the LCWIP contribute towards achieving the walking and cycling elements of the SMC.
The Chase zebra crossing
During a road safety outside schools assessment in April 2022, parents, residents and the local school highlighted concerns about the safety of crossing The Chase by St. John's Road.
Proposals were drawn up and then consulted on in autumn 2023. It was decided that:
- the slip road into St. John's Road should be closed
- the bell mouths of Elmside and Benbrick Road altered to simplify them
- the pedestrian island on The Chase would be replaced with a zebra crossing
The works were completed in February 2024.
The new zebra crossing is located along a key pedestrian route. It makes the journey to school for many pupils of Queen Eleanor's Church of England School, Onslow Infants School and their parents safer. It also provides safer pedestrian access to those wishing to use sustainable transport to and from Guildford Cathedral and Surrey University as well as providing a more comfortable experience for people with pushchairs and mobility scooters. The plans originally published for consultation can still be viewed on The Chase, Guildford zebra crossing proposal webpage.
Town Centre Transport Package
The Guildford Town Centre Transport Package (TCTP) was identified as a Local Road Network Infrastructure Project (LRN1) in the Guildford Borough Council Infrastructure Delivery Plan. It includes a number of projects to support a switch to active travel modes, Guildford College Link+, the A25 cycle corridor, and the replacement of the old Walnut Bridge to name a few.
Most of these projects have now been delivered. More information about what has been achieved can be found on the Guildford Town Centre Transport Package webpage.
