SGN Works - A244 Milbourne Lane Junction

Southern Gas Network is currently undertaking works in A244 Esher. These works are taking place under contraflow traffic management and were initiated due to an emergency gas escape. The A244 is part of Surrey's Lane Rental network and we are applying a £1500 per day Lane Rental charge for these works.

Traffic management

The right turn into Milbourne Lane is currently suspended as there is only sufficient road width to allow a single lane of traffic to travel northbound through the junction. This is being done to mitigate the likely disruption as any vehicles waiting to complete this turn would block the northbound A244 flow, likely creating considerably more congestion.

Why are these works taking place

During their on-site investigation SGN have found a leak close to the junction of Milbourne lane and multiple high gas readings in several areas further along the road. They have dug down on this to carry out the repair works without carrying further excavations; however, this has been made difficult due to 6 other utility apparatus directly over their pipe.

They will carry on trying to find a way of getting a repair device down to the pipe and are arranging for the repair device (sprayer) to be supplied to site as soon as possible.

Why must the excavations on the A244 remain open

While carrying out further checks, SGN currently have excavations in the carriageway to help vent the gas and find the source. Despite having no recorded gas pipe in the vicinity of the readings or even this section of road, the gas reading are still very high creating a considerable safety concern. Due to this, the excavations already opened currently in the A244 need to remain open, as they are venting the leaking gas to the atmosphere and thus preventing it travelling along ducting and into properties.

SGN are carrying out further investigations trying to find the source of the gas through multiple different methods including excavation, camera operations and core and vac.

Why is no one on site

Due to the very nature of these investigations, there may be periods when no active digging or work is visible on-site. However, a team member will likely be present to monitor gas levels for safety.

We at SCC are continuing to inspect the site daily and remain in contact with SGN's management about how best to resolve this as swiftly as possible. Regrettably leaks of this nature where gas runs along ducts can be notoriously difficult to resolve swiftly. Additionally, simply excavating wherever they get any gas readings can result in multiple abortive excavations achieving no actual repair.

Our Streetworks Officers are visiting the site daily liaising with SGN and the work crew on and off site to ensure the disruption is kept to minimum and the optimum temporary traffic management measures are in place through each phase of these repairs.

Power On Connections - Church Hill Pyrford

These works are being undertaken to install a new electrical power cable from Pyrford through to Ripley.

This project primarily involves Upshot Lane, Church Hill and Newark Lane and the new supply will provide resilience for current demands and add capacity to service supply requirements into the future.

What is the scale of impact?

We at Surrey County Council are aware of the significance of these roads providing a connection from Pyrford and Woking to Ripley and beyond and we are working closely with the company carrying out the works, Power On Connections, to ensure travel disruption is kept to a minimum.

The section of work on Upshot Lane is now complete and the next phase on Church Hill has been agreed. These works will now start on 14 November and will continue until the 21 of December meaning the road will be clear on the approach to the festive season. Church Hill, from the junction with Upshot Lane to the junction with Warren Lane will be closed from the 14th November.

Closure of Church Hill road

Regrettably, the works can only be carried out with a closure of Church Hill. The closure will be done in sections and access to residents and the church will be maintained at all times although it may be that some delay could be experienced if barriers, machinery etc., requires moving and access cannot be guaranteed from a specific end of the closed section.

Other than a two-day period at a stage yet to be confirmed when the works cross the junction, Warren Lane will remain open. It is advised that signage will be positioned at suitable locations particularly on Pyrford Road advising of the unsuitability of Warren Lane for a diversion route. Signage will also be placed on Newark Lane at the junction with the High Street in Ripley giving motorists advanced warning of the closure of Church Hill.

We have requested that Power On Connections work extended hours including some weekend work to complete this section of the project in a timely manner and arrangements are currently being made to host a Drop In session at St Nicholas church hall which will be open to all and any further questions can be answered.
