Course intent

SAL’s intent is to provide inclusive learning in the community which enhances personal development, encourages learners to live healthy, active lives and improves employability and skills.

Make your own cosmetic bag with a lining and zip during this one day workshop.

You will learn how to use sewing machine techniques to make this cosmetic bag with the fabric of your choice and full support from the tutor.

What will we cover?

You will learn:

  • How to cut fabric using a patterns.
  • How to fuse the interfacing.
  • Inserting a zip.
  • Lining the bag.
  • Hand- and machine-sewing techniques suitable to complete your project.

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Beginners - Specifically for those with little or no experience of sewing as well as those who need a refresher.

For adults aged 18 years or older.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please bring to the session:

  • Half meter of outer fabric of your choice.
  • Half meter of lining fabric of your choice.
  • Half meter of median or thick iron glue on interfacing or iron-on wadding interfacing.
  • 9-10 inches zip. (Not invisible zip).
  • Basic sewing kit- fabric and paper scissors, pins, sewing threads.
  • A pen for notes & a small ruler.
  • A sewing machine if you have one with standard zip foot.

There will be no extra costs.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor you may like to progress onto our longer course/(s) or enhance your learning on our other Art & Craft course/(s)

The course levels are:

Introduction courses will give you a taste of what a subject or course is like before you progress to a longer course.

Workshops are usually short one-off or extension courses focusing on a particular area and are normally one day or less.

Beginners courses are suitable for those with no previous experience or as a “refresher”. They may be described as such throughout the year as those advertised in the autumn term generally continue for the spring and sometimes the summer too.

Improvers courses are for those with some previous experience who are starting to work towards more independent learning.

Advanced courses are for those who have substantial previous experience, are capable of working quite independently, and who wish to develop with the support and guidance of a tutor.

Mixed Ability courses are suitable for those with any level of previous experience.

Courses without a level in the title are suitable for all levels.

When you enrol please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
