History - Ancient Greece: The Trojan War. Was it fact or fiction?

Course intent

For the ancient Greeks the Ten Years’ War against Troy was a key part of their history and culture. But did it take place? If so the War ‘occurred’ during the Greek Bronze Age, when king Agamemnon was living in powerful Mycenae?

What will I learn?

Examine evidence from the archaeological sites, artefacts discovered at the location of Troy in modern day Turkey, and from known historical events. Also, evidence from Athenian vase paintings, Roman wall paintings of warfare at Troy, including the famous Trojan horse, along with the lasting influences on later artists and sculptors.

The literary sources, from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and the impact of Homer on later Greek and Roman life.
