Course intent

We’ll study the countless examples of the Romans skills in architecture , engineering and town planning throughout their empire.

What will I learn?

We shall investigate: Roman building techniques adopted from the Greek world. New building techniques used by the Romans, their invention, development, and use of concrete, and of all forms of the arch. The design and building methods of some key buildings such as the Colosseum and Pantheon, which survived completely intact for nearly 2,000 years.

Also their skills in water engineering – their construction and use of aqueducts. The impact of Roman buildings on daily life and on the architecture of subsequent centuries.

This lecture is suitable for everyone.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

We recommend bringing paper and pen so you can make notes.
