Course intent

Our series of one-off lectures will give you the opportunity to delve into the details of Royal History with our expert tutor. In this lecture, we will explore the life of King Henry I.

What will I learn?

Henry I was the third of the Norman kings and the youngest son of William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders. Reigning for thirty-five years, his learning earned him the sobriquet of ‘Beauclerc’ (fine scholar). His administrative reforms earned him the nickname ‘Lion of Justice’. Tragically his son and heir, William ‘The Atheling’, drowned in 1120 and much of the latter part of King Henry’s reign was taken up in ensuring that his own descendants succeeded to the throne.
