Calligraphy Workshop - Taster Day Italics - All Abilities

Course intent

Get a taste for Italics and learn about their origins and history. Learn how to write simple phrases and quotes using coloured gouache and ink that you can turn into gift tags, bookmarks or labels or to decorate a journal.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • which materials and tools are required to write the Italic script
  • how to write the lower-case alphabet with a broad-edged pen nib
  • about spacing
  • how to write in colour using gouache and some inks
  • how to write simple phrases and quotes for bookmarks and gift tags
  • script variations

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is for beginners, but if you wish to refresh skills after a time away from art or calligraphy you should bring along some text/project they would like to work on during the day

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • H Pencil
  • Ruler(18” if possible)
  • Jar for water
  • Kitchen Towel
  • A short verse or quote you would like to write out
  • wear old clothes or an apron
  • packed lunch

    What can I do when I finish the course?

    You will have the opportunity to join a longer running Calligraphy class or other workshops to improve your skills and learn new calligraphic hands. You can book onto:

Saturday workshops:

  • 12th October Calligraphy – Meditative Japanese Brush Work – Beginners
  • 19th October Calligraphy – Decorate a Japanese Paper Lantern Workshop
  • 16th November Calligraphy – Festive Calligraphy for Cards and Gifts - Beginners & Improvers Further workshops are planned for the spring and summer term.

    We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
