Course intent

Develop your creativity and personal expression through this exciting one-day watercolour intense course. Discover new and exciting techniques which take your painting to another level, then learn how to push and experiment even further with new confidence.

You will learn with Rose Bramwell, who has 30 years’ experience teaching Art. She works as an editorial illustrator and visualisation illustrator for local architects as well as exhibiting in local galleries and art fairs.

What will I learn?

You will learn: · How to effectively use different brushes and brush techniques for different tree forms · Techniques for working with light and contrast and painting the shadows of trees · Understanding mark making to create texture, pattern and depth. · Techniques for watercolour mixing using colour theory for Autumn. · Layering techniques and washes including optical mixing on the paper · Speed painting and watercolour sketching. · Successfully including trees in your landscape composition

As the course progresses you will learn how to combine techniques gaining confidence to push processes, challenge and move your practice forward. Learning to select and use both first and secondhand references will be important.

We will also be looking at the wider context of both historical and contemporary watercolour artist’s techniques to help inform our ideas and watercolour techniques.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is All abilities. Those with some experience of drawing would be helpful but not essential.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring: · Paper: Watercolour paper –ARCHES 100% Cotton Cold Press 300 gsm A4 · Brushes: Synthetic or synthetic/hair mixtures, Round pointed: 12 /14 (Recommend Rosemary & Co Designer SER 344) Hake ½” and 1” and 1/2 “ Dagger sword brush (Recommend Rosemary & Co) · Paints: Artist’s Quality in tubes or pans. Most are usually contained in a beginner’s set or can be bought separately. Suggested colours: Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Rose Madder or Quinacridone Magenta, Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Blue, Payne’s Grey · Watercolour palette for mixing paint · HB, B pencils · Tissues and Cotton Wool · Spray Bottle · 3M Magic Tape · A3 MDF Board or Foam Mount Board to tape paper on to · Small notebook or sketchbook/ journal (suggested A4/A5). An A6 SeaWhites sketchbook is provided on the course. A3 Cartridge paper is also provided.

What can I do when I finish the course?

To progress onto other longer courses in watercolour or other SAL courses.
