Calligraphy – Decorate a Japanese Paper Lantern Workshop

Course intent

You will be provided with a traditional Japanese paper lantern designed to hang from a hook or a pole that you will decorate with beautiful Japanese brush calligraphy. Enjoy the peace and calm of this class whilst you write brush characters (Kanji).

What will I learn?

You will learn

• the basic principles of writing Japanese characters.
• How to use the traditional Japanese materials of a brush, ink and Japanese paper.
• How to create your first brush strokes and build on these basic steps to create some lovely Japanese characters on a traditional Japanese paper lantern.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Anyone interested in using calligraphy as a creative and meditative practice. No knowledge of Japanese is necessary as Kanji are ideograms, so each one has its own meaning and corresponds to a word. The tutor is a Japanese speaker and will guide you through the steps needed to write and understand what you have written in Japanese.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

• some paper to practice on: absorbent paper is best such as newsprint/newspaper or sugar paper.
• Wear dark colours or old clothes (or wear an apron) as occasionally ink can spill or spread.

Materials of ink, and a Japanese paper lantern will be supplied and you will be loaned a Japanese brush for use during the workshop.

The tutor can advise you where to buy your own materials to continue at home.

What can I do when I finish the course?

We offer Calligraphy courses and other Japanese Calligraphy workshops throughout the year:

• Calligraphy – Beginners on a Tuesday

Saturday workshop:

• 16th November Calligraphy – Festive Calligraphy for Cards and Gifts - Beginners & Improvers Further workshops are planned for the spring and summer term.
