Calligraphy – Festive Calligraphy for Cards and Gifts - Beginners & Improvers

High volumes of enquiries - July 2024

Due to high numbers of enquiries, there are currently longer waiting times on the phones and a delay to responses for voicemails, emails and enquiries.

We apologise for any inconvenience and are working as quickly as possible to get to you.

Course intent

On this Festive Workshop we will learn a decorative Gothic script to use for our cards and gift designs. This script has very straight sides and angular joins with contrasting capitals. We will learn the lower-case script and some capitals to write a short quote for your projects. You will create a card from a variety of designs, or a simple box and a bookmark. If you want to make a quote your gift, please bring something short to write out.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to prepare the pen, ink and paper for writing.

Using your observation skills, and with demonstrations from your tutor, you will learn how the letters are formed. You will be able to write the alphabet, words and sentences, and start to use colour and metallic paints to enhance your writing

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for beginners and those with some experience of calligraphy. If you are left-handed, please email the tutor on adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk because there are different nibs for left and right handers

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs

Pens, ink, paint and some good paper for your projects will be supplied.

You need to bring:

  • A sketchbook or notepad and biro
  • Two pencils – an HB and a harder 2H for example
  • A ruler, rubber and pencil sharpener
  • An A3 sketch or layout pad
  • Any favourite short quotations
  • Any calligraphy, or watercolours painting materials you may have
  • Old clothes or an apron
  • Reading glasses if you use them

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners can join longer calligraphy or art courses with SAL and attend other one day workshops to learn different styles of writing. Your tutor is happy to signpost you to other courses of study with local and national calligraphy societies and with other providers
