Course intent

Discover inner peace and strength through Japanese calligraphy and bring that mindfulness to all aspects of daily life. Experience the beautiful art of Japanese Calligraphy and learn about Japanese culture. Discover how to focus on bringing a balance between the mind and body. Deeper spiritual and cultural connections elevate what could be a simple pastime into something infinitely more meaningful.

What will I learn?

You will learn

  • the basic principles of writing Japanese characters,
  • how to use the traditional Japanese materials of a brush, ink and Japanese paper
  • how to create your first brush strokes
  • how to build on these basic steps to create some lovely Japanese characters on a traditional Japanese paper
  • The importance of meditation and Zen as part of a mindful practice

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for anyone interested in using art as a meditative practice. No knowledge of Japanese is necessary as Kanji are ideograms, so each one has its own meaning and corresponds to a word. The tutor is a Japanese speaker and will guide you through the steps needed to write and understand what you have written in Japanese.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Materials of ink and Japanese paper for your finished work will be supplied and the loan of a Japanese brush, however you will need to bring:

  • some extra paper to practice on; absorbent paper is best such as newspaper or sugar paper.
  • Please wear dark colours or old clothes (or wear an apron) as occasionally ink can spill or spread.

Basic materials are provided for the classroom however the tutor can advise you where to buy your own materials to continue at home
