Course intent

Explore some basic Goldwork techniques to create beautiful metallic embroidery designs with a RSN (Royal School of Needlework) professional embroiderer and RSN teacher who has won an award for teaching.

What will I learn?

You will learn: · the most useful and most commonly used stitches to enable you to gain confidence in goldwork embroidery to progress to the next level · the basic Goldwork terminology · the techniques of couching and chipping using various threads · felt padding · about different options for design source and embroidery inspiration

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for learners with some embroidery experience who want to expand their knowledge to this lovely but more advanced medium.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring: · a pencil and notebook · some light-coloured fabric (eg calico) or some coloured fabric for a design. If you have velvet that will be even better! · a ring frame (preferably 8” but any size will do) · some different sized needles · embroidery scissors · Goldwork threads (Japanese Thread or Passing, Pearl Purl, Bright Check, Smooth Purl) · Polyester Cotton thread or stranded cotton to match metal thread · Beeswax · felt fabric

Goldwork starter packs will be available to purchase along with other optional equipment for sale on the day.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You can progress onto a longer embroidery course which would provide in depth personal development including designing your own work. There are also sewing clothes and for the home courses and Saturday workshops.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
