Pottery & Claywork - Throwing & Turning - Beginners

High volumes of enquiries - July 2024

Due to high numbers of enquiries, there are currently longer waiting times on the phones and a delay to responses for voicemails, emails and enquiries.

We apologise for any inconvenience and are working as quickly as possible to get to you.

Course intent

This workshop will give you the chance to experience clay and throw on the Potters’ wheel. Suitable for beginners. You will select your best pot that will be unturned and bisque fired ready to take home.

What will I learn?

You will learn: · How to wedge the clay, centre the clay on the wheel and make a basic cylinder. · The tutor will also give you a demonstration on how to alter the basic cylinder shape. · As there is one person to a wheel you will have time to practise and develop your throwing skills.

Those with some experience will be helped to improve and become more confident with their throwing skills.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Some experience of pottery is helpful but beginners are welcome.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please bring refreshments and lunch or change for the coffee machine onsite.

You will need: · Sensible closed-toe shoes · Apron & suitable clothes for a pottery studio · Notebook and pen · Avoid wearing hand and wrist jewellery to prevent loss or damage

Basic materials / technician costs are included.

However, learners who choose to work on larger projects or a significant number of pieces may be asked to pay additional materials costs depending on size or quantity.

Please note that there is a maximum size, which is 30cm x 30cm x 40cm.

It is not possible to fire anything larger than this.

We are only able to fire work that has been produced in the class using materials provided by SAL.

Learners can progress onto more advanced pottery courses with SAL.
