Acrylic Painting & Drawing - Landscape - Beginners & Improvers

High volumes of enquiries - August 2024

Due to high numbers of enquiries, there are currently longer waiting times on the phones and a delay to responses for voicemails, emails and enquiries.

We apologise for any inconvenience and are working as quickly as possible to get to you.

Course intent

Develop techniques and methods to draw and paint a local landscape. Learn how to set up and compose a drawing or painting to create a more compelling image and explore various acrylic painting techniques. We will work outdoors for one session at Guildford Castle and use that to develop a painting in the studio in the following weeks.

What will I learn?

You will learn: · how to use composition to design a successful landscape painting or drawing · how to work outside and collect the right information to continue in the studio · how to create and then work from photographs and sketches · how to work from direct observation · colour mixing · how to describe shape, form, tone and texture · brush handling · information about acrylic paint and different techniques you can use

You will review your work with one-to-one support and group discussion.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for beginners and improvers, but if you are a complete beginner, you may find it useful to complete a ‘just drawing’ or ‘drawing – beginners’ course first.

You will need to complete some course documentation for assessment and evaluation.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

For the first week bring: · a set of drawing/graphite pencils with a range of pencil grades such as H/HB/ B/2B/4B etc · an eraser · a pencil sharpener · an A4 sketch book · perhaps some colour pencils, or similar, to add colour to your initial drawing · if you have, a camera or phone camera to take photos when at the Castle grounds · Acrylic painting media and what you will need to bring will be discussed during the first week. · For the second week we will be working outside, so you will also need a portable chair and sketch book.

The Tutor will provide images to work from.

If you have any questions before the first session, please email the tutor at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

What can I do when I finish the course?

To progress onto other arts and crafts courses.

We also offer Saturday workshops that would help you to develop further: · 12th October Acrylic Painting – Autumn landscape with trees · 19th October Life & Portrait - Abstracting the Figure: Mixed Media and Collage – All Abilities · 16th November Drawing and Painting - Autumn fruits and nature, seasonal still life in pen, ink and watercolour wash · 23rd November Life & Portrait - Dynamic Portraits (clothed model) - All Abilities
