Course intent
Learn how to paint an abstract painting. Explore different approaches to making abstract art through compelling visual presentations, and a broad look at the use of colour, tone, composition, texture and paint application
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- A variety of paint techniques which will be demonstrated and explained by the tutor, who will encourage an imaginative, sensitive and individual handling of paint
- To become familiar with visual language by looking at abstract art from the early 20th century to the present day
- Different methods of arriving at abstraction – e.g. starting from observation, using experimental methods and translating different sensory information.
- a basic acrylic or oil paint set (60ml tubes). Bring what you already have. You can email the tutor with your queries at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk and copy in sophie.artemis@surreycc.gov.uk
- paintbrushes
- pencils, rubber, eraser
- either oil or acrylic painting pad of at least A3 size
- A sketchbook to plan and record your techniques and to reflect on your progress.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is All abilities although particularly suitable for improvers and those with a basic understanding of modern abstract painting.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
For the first lesson you need to bring:

What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto other courses exploring different genres of art using different media or build a portfolio for art college.
