Drawing - Beginners

Course intent

You will learn the basic knowledge and skills needed to draw. You will be guided on your journey through a series of drawing exercises learning a range of styles, from quick and simple to more detailed and realistic. Each week, you will learn, step-by-step, how to achieve different techniques and learn new skills. We will look at a range of subject matter including landscape, animals, botanical, still-life, drawing people and referencing the old masters, giving you a chance to work on subject matter you like, but also subject matter you have never tried.

You will learn about: · drawing tools · the difference between different pencils and pens · which paper to use for what · basic drawing techniques · proportion · shading/tone · blending · hatching · perspective

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is designed for beginners and returning learners with the tutor teaching techniques and skills step-by-step. This means that all learners will be able to watch each part of the process before having a go themselves.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring: · a pad of paper - minimum weight of 130gsm (not photocopier paper which is 80 gsm) The number is written on the sketch pad, the higher the number, the thicker the paper. You do not need paper heavier than 220 g/m2 if cartridge paper. · a range of pencils - Tutor mainly uses 0.5mm mechanical pencils - one with HB leads (the leads they all come with) & one with 2H 0.5mm leads (you have to buy these separately). · normal pencils can also be used: HB, and 2H. (plus a) · rubber and pencil sharpener · a range of black fine line drawing pens - 0.1mm, 0.3mm, 0.5mm, 0.7mm (for example). If you think you may want to add watercolour paint to your drawing at a later date, these will need to be Waterproof pens. Uni Pin fine line pens (made by Uni Ball) are a good brand if you are buying new pens.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto other fine art courses with SAL, or other providers.

If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
