Jewellery & Silverwork - Beginners & Improvers

High volumes of enquiries - July 2024

Due to high numbers of enquiries, there are currently longer waiting times on the phones and a delay to responses for voicemails, emails and enquiries.

We apologise for any inconvenience and are working as quickly as possible to get to you.

Course intent

Make beautiful, handmade jewellery. Start building up basic skills and design ideas as a beginner to create simple pieces or, if you have some experience, be challenged to develop and work on your own designs.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • the essential skills needed to begin to design and make jewellery
  • sawing, filing, soldering, polishing and texturing processes
  • design and construction for individual projects
  • safe working practices in the jewellery studio
  • If you already have some experience, you will build on existing skills and learn new techniques to be able to design and create your own bespoke jewellery
  • Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for Beginners and Improvers (those with some jewellery making experience). An ability to read and follow instructions will be helpful as well as an ability to measure and do simple calculations. Jewellery making involves a lot of fine work so having steady hands will help.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

    • a notebook or sketchbook and pencil to record the processes
    • you may want to bring a camera to take photographs of your work as it progresses
    • It is essential that you wear strong closed-toe shoes (not sandals or flip flops). An apron and/or wearing old clothes is strongly advised. Long hair will need to be tied back in the jewellery studios

Copper is provided, but you will need to provide your own precious metals, gemstones, beads etc

    at additional cost.

Your tutor will advise on suppliers of precious metals.

Please be aware that access to the jewellery studio and nearby toilets is via stairs, and there are also steps inside the studio itself.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners will have the opportunity to progress onto an Improvers class within Surrey Adult Learning or onto a specialist short-course or workshop. The tutor will be happy to assist learners wishing to build a portfolio of work for entry to Further Education or suggest alternative courses of study with other providers.
