Course intent

During this online course you will develop your skills in drawing and sketching in a friendly, creative learning environment. Focusing on drawing the natural world around us, we will explore tonal value, line, texture, proportion and perspective using various mediums and techniques. We will cover natural and human forms, still life, landscape and much more with each term focusing on a famous master’s technique.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • The basic principles of observational drawing and sketching using line, tone, form, perspective and composition
  • A wide variety of drawing and sketching techniques using various dry mediums including graphite & coloured pencils, charcoal, pens and soft pastels
  • Develop your drawing skills using picture reference and working from life to draw various subjects and natural forms, landscapes and still life objects
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is suitable for all abilities, from beginners to those with a little more experience.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • A sketchbook and pen
  • Any drawing materials you may already have
  • An A3 & A4 Sketchpad or cartridge paper
  • 2B, 4B, 6B pencils
  • A putty rubber and sharpener

Throughout the course you will also require various other drawing materials and the tutor will advise you what you need in advance.

For the Zoom lesson:

This course will be delivered through live online sessions using Zoom for Education.

To fully participate in this course, you will need:

  • An email address
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A computer/laptop /tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome)
  • microphone and webcam.

Once enrolled on this course you will receive detailed instructions for taking part online

Please note: You will find it necessary to have access to a printer to make your own hard copies of resources.

The various materials and resources you will need through the course will be discussed at induction.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor you may like to progress onto another course or one-day specialist workshops with SAL.

If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
