Course intent

Explore the basic elements of drawing in a relaxed and friendly environment. You will learn to use new techniques and gain skills to enable you to get more creative in your drawing. The overall aim of the course is to help you discover and develop your abilities through a mixture of practice, discussion and demonstration techniques

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Basic sketching skills
  • How to apply line-tone and texture
  • Basic composition and perspective
  • Practice techniques
  • How to use drawing materials with confidence
  • With full one to one support from your tutor
  • How to take inspiration from portraits by artists, including past masters and more contemporary

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is for all abilities. From those with little or no experience of drawing to those who have practised before but need a refresher to get motivated again.

  • What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

    • A tin of mixed grade pencils from hard to soft. Coloured pencils are also recommended. The best brands include Caran D'Ache.
    • A Drawing Pad (A4) or Sketchbook
    • Notebook & Pen
    • A pad of coloured/toned paper
    • A tablet eraser

    Learners are expected to bring their own materials. Some less common or unusual materials may be brought in by tutor or instruction given on where you can purchase items.

    What can I do when I finish the course?

    In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further Arts and Crafts Courses.

    We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
