Family Learning - Supporting Your LGBTQ+ Child

Course intent

This course will give parents/carers the knowledge and resources to and understanding to support your LGBTQ+ child and wider family. This will impact positively on your family’s wellbeing

What will I learn?

This course is a FREE online 2 hour parenting workshop. Parent/carers will learn tips and strategies to support their LGBTQ+ child, understand appropriate language terms and explore possible challenges that families may face.

Topics will include · Appropriate language and terms · Exploring possible challenges and how to support your child · Sharing of resources and support groups

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

If you are a parent/carer of a child or teenager who is questioning their gender identity or sexual orientation, or who identifies as LGBTQ+, and live in Surrey, this course will provide a safe space and help you learn new ways to try and support your child. This is delivered online via Zoom.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

What do I need to bring : · Have your camera on · Provide a mobile phone number and email address when you enrol so that we can contact you about your course. · Please attend all sessions · A reliable internet connection · A computer/laptop/tablet or phone with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and camera · A pen and paper · Check your email for detailed joining instructions two days before course starts. · Fill out the `Getting to know you` form and fill out `Tell us what you think` form · Contact us on family.learning@surreycc.gov.uk if you have any questions

What can I do when I finish the course?

At the end of this course, we will give you details of what you may wish to move on to next, for example volunteering, further courses with Surrey Adult Learning, a college or employment

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
