Course intent
Theatre and drama, comedy and tragedy all originated in Ancient Greece. Meanwhile, dramatic entertainments such as gladiatorial combats and chariot races dominated in the Roman world.
What will I learn?
We shall investigate the festival to the Greek God Dionysos, the development of theatre design, production, staging of plays performed. Also explore some of the major Greek tragedies, their key beliefs about humans and gods.
In the Roman world; the concept of ‘panis et circenses’, Bread and Circuses used by the Emperors to keep the population of Rome happy. The locations and designs of venues for the gladiatorial combats eg the Colosseum, Circus Maximus.
