Explore our Democratic systems which owe their existence to the principles established by the ancient Athenians over 2,500 years ago.
What will I learn?
We shall concentrate on some of the key events that shaped its development The course of history of the ancient city of Athens in the sixth and fifth centuries B.C.E. The social structure of the city-state of the polis of Athens and the role of the ordinary citizen in public life. The wars against Persia at the beginning of the C5th. BCE and their impact on the changes in the political system of Athens. The stages in the development from monarchy and oligarchy to democracy and the key elements of the final system of government.
