History - Ancient Rome: The Daily Lives of Women in the Roman Empire

Course intent

We’ll study the roles and treatment of women throughout Roman history from the expected roles of female domestic slaves to the potential power wielded by the wives of Emperors.

What will I learn?

We shall investigate the social structure of Roman society, the place of the women born into different social groups, customs leading to marriage. The legal position of wives and opportunities to get involved in politics and business. Also, the role and power of Emperor’s wives, such as Livia, the wife of the first Emperor.

Some primary historical sources will provide evidence and looking at art work such as sculpture, wall paintings and archaeological evidence from sites such as Pompeii.
