Watercolour - Painting Your Local Landscape Workshop

Course intent

This exciting one-day course will develop and challenge your learning and covers a range of new and exciting watercolour techniques. This is a great opportunity to learn how to draw your local landscape. Easy to follow techniques will guide you through drawing on location and then back in the studio from both your photographs and sketches.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Control a bigger brush and start to really understand colour; how to mix it and how to design your palette for maximum effect.
  • Explore layering and glazing techniques, soft light, and hard-edge light effects to describe textures and surfaces on the coast together with the mood of the weather and sea
  • Learn to use second-hand references in a creative way.
  • Look at the wider context of both historical d contemporary watercolour artist’s techniques to help inform ideas and watercolour techniques.

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is All abilities. Those with some experience of drawing would be helpful but not essential.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • Paper: Watercolour paper –ARCHES 100% Cotton Cold Press 300 gsm A4
  • Brushes: Synthetic or synthetic/hair mixtures
  • Paints: Artist’s Quality in tubes or pans. Most are usually contained in a beginner’s set or can be bought separately
  • Watercolour palette for mixing paint
  • HB, B pencils
  • Tissues and Cotton Wool
  • Spray Bottle
  • 3M Magic Tape
  • A3 MDF Board or Foam Mount Board to tape paper on to
  • Small notebook or sketchbook/ journal (suggested A4/A5)
  • An A6 SeaWhites sketchbook is provided on the course. A3 Cartridge paper is also provided.

    What can I do when I finish the course?

    To progress onto other longer courses in watercolour or other SAL courses.

    We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
