Course intent
.A one-day workshop providing the opportunity to explore and experience the engaging craft of Appliqué, perfect for embellishing quilts, items for yourself or gifts for family and friends.
What will I learn?
.You will have the opportunity to learn, through instruction and practical activities, aspects of the following:
- Basic needle-turn, reverse and machined applique techniques using your own designs or templates provided
- Layering and combining the applique methods and other textile techniques
- Suitable fabrics and components
- A selection of tools and equipment
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This practical workshop is for people who enjoy sewing and is designed for beginners and improvers. If you are a beginner some familiarity with fabric, thread and a sewing machine would be beneficial.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
• A ‘needs list’ will be sent out before the start of the workshop which will include what you need to bring and where to source fabrics. Some recycled fabrics may be a viable option.
- You are required to provide a variety of fabrics for trialling the techniques, [plus your own fabrics and thread if you choose to undertake an individual project]
- You will need basic sewing equipment, eg pins, needles and scissors etc.
- Sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the course.
What can I do when I finish the course?
This workshop can be studied in isolation or considered as an introduction into a much larger subject area that makes a creative hobby. Further Patchwork and Quilting courses will be offered throughout the year by Surrey Adult Learning to develop the newly acquired skills and this subject area. Occasional Saturday classes and other Needlecraft classes will also be offered. For further details, please visit our website – www.surreycc.gov.uk/adultlearning
