Course intent
If you are nervous in the kitchen are new to the kitchen or just want to learn more recipes, then Cookery for Men is the course for you. The intent of this course is for you to learn a range of basic skills and knowledge enabling you to produce tasty, seasonal, and healthy dishes from scratch, and adapt recipes with confidence long after the course.
What will I learn?
The Cookery for Men course includes:
- knife skills.
- store cupboard ingredient knowledge.
- essential, basic cookery skills
- using a range of kitchen appliances
- a focus on seasonal produce
- recognising ingredients that work well together.
- meal planning
- food safety and kitchen hazard knowledge
- adaptations for specific diets – gluten free or vegetarian for example
Recipes are based on the seasons but usually include a main dish, then either a starter or dessert.
The course is largely learner-led, with the dishes taught being chosen with the learners’ wishes and tastes in mind. The tutor will evolve the course with the learners.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
Please ensure you have completed the following before the first session:

- You will receive an email outlining the ingredients & resources you need to bring to the first lesson and those that will be supplied.
- Inform adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk if you need any adaptations to the recipe.
- Containers to take your dish(es) home
What can I do when I finish the course?
We offer a range of culinary workshops and courses throughout the term, look at our website for all the details. It would be great to see you again.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
