Course intent
Celebrate the popular festival of Sakura – when the wonderful Cherry blossoms are in full bloom in spring in Japan – by writing brush characters (Kanji) about spring and through folding origami Sakura flowers and petals. You will enjoy the peace and calm of this class while writing and folding.
What will I learn?
You will:
- be shown the basic principles of writing Japanese characters using the traditional Japanese materials of a brush, ink and Japanese paper
- You will be guided how to create your first brush strokes and how to build on these basic steps to create some lovely Japanese characters while learning about the Japanese festival of Sakura – Cherry Blossoms in spring
- You will also be shown how to fold exquisite, traditional Japanese origami flowers.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is for:
- Anyone interested in Japanese art and culture – no knowledge of the language is necessary as Kanji are ideograms, so each one has its own meaning and corresponds to a word
- The tutor is a Japanese speaker and will guide you through the steps needed to write and understand what you have written in Japanese.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- Materials of ink and Japanese paper for your finished work will be supplied and the loan of a Japanese brush, however you will need some extra paper to practice on; absorbent paper is best such as newspaper or sugar paper.
- Please wear dark colours or old clothes (or wear an apron) as occasionally ink can spill or spread.
- Basic materials are provided for the classroom however the tutor can advise you where to buy your own materials to continue at home.
What can I do when I finish the course?
Further courses are available in Japanese Calligraphy and the tutor can guide you to learn more characters and cursive scripts. Japanese Language courses are also available with Surrey Adult Learning.
