Course intent
Learn how to use pen, ink and watercolour wash to draw and paint Birds and a selection of related objects such as eggs, nests and feathers exploring various techniques, colour and textures.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is for all abilities so is suitable for beginners; for people who need a refresher or who want to refine their skills further and be inspired by a new subject matter.
For adults aged 18 years or older.
You will need to complete some course documentation for assessment and evaluation.
As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- pencils (graphite pencils HB and 2B)
- eraser
- sharpener
- watercolour paper pad (suggestion A4) 300gsm, slight texture (Not rough texture or hot pressed/ smooth)
- a set of watercolour paints (as many colours as possible) if you are buying, I would recommend a small Windsor and Newton, Cotman set like the Sketcher’s Pocket Set which costs around £15 for 12 ‘half pans’.
- a waterproof art pen with a fine point (0.2 is good), or a selection of art pens if you have them such as Uni–Pin or Faber–Castell.
- a small bottle of waterproof black ink such as Winsor and Newton black Indian ink, but any Indian ink or water-resistant black ink will be fine)
- Watercolour brushes, including round brushes size 4 and 6 and something smaller with a point for more detailed work (perhaps a rigger brush)
- a palette or white plate to mix on
- tissues or kitchen roll
- water jar
- optional- printed out images, or photographs, or images you can look at on a tablet that you bring with you of Birds, feathers, nests etc that you find inspiring

What can I do when I finish the course?
Learners can progress onto many opportunities to take up other art & craft classes, including further watercolour, drawing and painting courses or one-day specific workshops.
The Tutor teaches drawing and painting at Guildford centre on a Mondays and Friday morning and Farnham centre on a Thursday morning and afternoon.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
